Traditionally, garden rooms and buildings have been adorned with wood cladding, with Western Red Cedar being a popular choice. However, modern alternatives to wood, such as composite and man-made cladding products, have gained significant popularity so we thought we would take a quick look at some garden room cladding options.

So, what exactly is composite cladding? Typically, today's composite cladding options are made from Wood Plastic Composite (WPC), a material that blends recycled wood fibre, recycled plastic, colourants, and bonding agents. The result is a product that looks remarkably like wood but is a durable and low-maintenance alternative to traditional cladding.

The main advantage of composite cladding is its low maintenance compared to wood. Composite cladding only needs occasional cleaning when it gets dirty. A simple rinse with a garden hose or a wash with soapy water and a soft brush is usually sufficient.

In contrast, wood cladding requires more upkeep. It needs regular cleaning and may also require oiling, staining, varnishing, or painting. Without proper maintenance, wood cladding can warp, rot, or become infested with wood-eating insects.

Despite the maintenance, wood cladding has its charm. For some, the natural look and feel of wood are worth the extra effort. Western Red Cedar, for instance, remains a popular choice. If left unprotected, it weathers from its rich reddish-brown colour to a silver-grey patina, which many find aesthetically pleasing.

When it comes to the exterior cladding for your garden room, the sky's the limit. There is no “right answer” for everyone. How you intend to use the garden room, how it fits into the space where it will be built, and the aesthetic look you desire will all influence your choice of materials.

There are other options too, beyond wood or Wood Plastic Composite. Cladding made from fibre cement, metal cladding such as aluminium or steel, or products like brick slips are all viable options.
